Work and structure of the Foundation

Due to the significance of the issues covered by the Charter, many participants in the 1997-conference expressed their wish to see the principles of the Charter spread throughout Europe. Therefore the conference organisers have established the Foundation Policing for a Multi-Ethnic Society.

The foundation has an international goal and was created to ensure a more solid and structured promotion, presentation and distribution of the Charter in European countries. The foundation is based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

The foundation structure consists of:

  • The international board of recommendation
This body covers the strategic and international level. It consists of members from different European countries. Their task is to advice the Rotterdam board on transnational matters concerning the foundation.
  • The Rotterdam board, staff and secretariat
The operational level. This consists of two representatives of each organisation making up the Rotterdam coalition and one chairperson. They must do all that is necessary to guarantee the continuity of the organisation.
  • Groups of field experts
The national operational level. The composition of this level is subject to change and it consists of representatives of NGOs, police services, municipalities and the public prosecutor’s office of each country. They constitute the channel for communication to the country they come from.

The Charter Foundation hopes that the issues addressed in the Charter will attrack the attention of your organisation, and that you will support its principles by establishing a partnership with the foundation and/or that you will formally recommend it to the responsible bodies. This way, you will be contributing to the distribution and international promotion of principles of utmost importance in our present multi-cultural society.
